“Augmented Reality (AR) for Informing and Engaging the Public about Environmental Pollution” – A Civic Engagement Lunch Talk Follow-Up
Introduction
On October 15th, 2025, Tanja Aitamurto, PhD, Associate professor of UIC’s Department of Communication, and her team presented at IPCE's first Civic Engagement Lunch Talk of the semester held on campus in Daley Hall. Her presentation was titled "Augmented Reality (AR) for Informing and Engaging the Public about Environmental Pollution”. She was accompanied by her research assistants, Michel Maksimova, PhD Student, Kendall Tyson, PhD candidate, and Niloufar Hajirahimi, PhD candidate.
During their talk, Dr. Aitamurto and her team explored how Augmented Reality can inform and engage communities about environmental pollution in Chicago. There was also a hands on demo of the augmented reality tool they used, so attendees could see first hand how the team implemented AR into their research.
