Alexander Diaz: Reflections from the DNC

UPPF Graduate Mentor Alexander Diaz shares his experience attending the 2024 Democratic National Convention

Summer 2024 was the experience of a lifetime. Aside from warmer weather, graduating from my undergraduate degree, and hanging out with friends and family, there was another moment that I wouldn’t have thought I would experience. This year is the presidential election season, meaning many in the US will continue to see TV ads, political debates, and much more throughout the rest of the year. There is also a national convention where each political party meets and nominates their candidate for the general election.

This year, the Democratic National Convention was held in Chicago, Illinois, where I was born and lived my entire life. I honestly didn’t think I would be able to attend the conventions, until my job offered me a ticket to attend the convention and be part of witnessing what the convention is really like. When I heard about this opportunity, I was so excited to be able to witness it. Coming from an immigrant family, I knew I had to say yes.

The conventions were held from August 19th - to August 22nd at the United Center. During my time at the DNC, I witnessed different panels discuss nationwide issues and speak to community organizers and elected officials on how to drive voter turnout in their communities. The biggest highlight was witnessing a candidate accepting the nomination to the candidate for President of the United States.

During my time, I couldn’t stop thinking about my parents and how they came to the US from another country without ever thinking that their kid would be able to witness this opportunity. I am glad that I took the opportunity to learn more about civic engagement and how various leaders are getting involved.
